What could be preventing my child from sleeping?

  • Too long between naps

  • Items in bed/crib

  • Over tired

  • Hasn’t established day and night routine with enough light stimulation

  • Too many naps are in the car

  • No set routine

  • Not enough floor time to practice skills

  • Room temperature 

  • Not using a sound machine

  • Room is too bright

Daytime awake windows

0-3  months: 60-90 minutes

 

3-4 months: 90 minutes -2 hours

 

5-6 months: 2-3 hours

 

7-14 months: 2-4 hours

 

14-24 months: 5-6 hours

Early signs of tiredness in            young children        

  • yawning

  • fussing

  • Loss of interest in toys

  • Turning face away

  • Glazed expression

  • Waving arms and legs

  • Looking pale

  • Going quiet

Signs of overtired in infants

  • Back arching

  • Rubbing eyes

  • Wanting comfort feeds

  • Not wanting to be put down

  • Crying unconsoliably

  • Pulling ears

  • Rubbing face on parent

  • Vigorous wiggling
